The race for Champions League qualification has gained momentum and
Juan Mata believes Manchester United cannot afford to drop points.
The Red Devils are sitting fourth in
the Premier League but face stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal
and Liverpool.
Speaking ahead of their mid-week
Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford, the Spaniard said:
"We play at home against Burnley
and we must win this one because the race for the Champions League spots is now
very close.
"We have to get the three points
at home, we know that, and that's what we are working for. I'm sure we will
make it with our people's help."
Meanwhile, United legend Andy Cole
reckons that the club must qualify for Europe’s elite competition if they hope
to attract world-class players.
Cole told The Mirror:
"I think most people recognise this is a new Manchester United taking
shape, so it's important that the club quickly wins some silverware, and the FA
Cup is an ideal opportunity to do so.
"If I'm honest, I would view it
as a massive bonus this season because, personally, I still think the main
objective has to be to finish in the top four in the Premier League in order to
qualify for next season's Champions League.
"I think that is the best way to
keep enticing top players as the manager continues to shape his squad to try to
get where Manchester United are accustomed to being."
