Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that Wojciech Szczesny
remains the club’s first choice goalkeeper despite playing second fiddle to
David Ospina in recent matches.
Ospina has impressed keeping four
successive clean sheets which has led to speculation that the Colombia shot
stopper has replaced Szczesny as the no.1 goalie.
However, Wenger says that the Polish
international is still the club’s no.1 but admitted he faces stiff competition
from Ospina and Emiliano Martinez.
Wenger told the London
Evening Standard: "David Ospina has had some time to settle
because he was injured when he arrived here.
"During that time we could see
his dedication, his focus and his quality. He's in a fight with Wojciech
Szczesny to start at the moment.
"Wojciech is the number one but
David has played recently. Can he retain the shirt in the coming games? We'll
decide that. I don't forget Emiliano Martinez either, who I rate highly. We
have three top goalkeepers and the fight for who starts is going on."
Ospina moved to the Emirates Stadium
from Nice last summer after impressing for Colombia during the 2014 FIFA World
Cup in Brazil.
